John 3:18- "Little children, we must not love in word or speech, but in deed and truth."

Looking Back...

As my first year of being here at Lee comes to an end and the memories start to flow with some tears and some laughter, I start to look back on this first year here. The things I have learned, the people I have met, the classes I have attended, the work shifts I have had, and the decisions I have made. I start to remember the first impressions I had of people and how untrue they turned out to be, the first of our hall dinners, and the beginning of friendships that now have turned into family. I remember the ice cream dates I have every week, the thousands of Wal-Mart runs, the boys I’ve met (some creepy, some not so nice, and some still pretty awesome), and the endless late night talks, all-nighters, and study sessions that turned into a laugh fest with my best friends. I remember the weekend trips, the endless work shifts, and the birthday weekend. The inside jokes, the peer leaders in Gateway, and “that night.” And in all these things I start to see how much I have learned in simply a year. Now I hate sentimental stuff and I guess this is what this kinda is, but I couldn’t help but look back and see how much I have grown in simply a year.

So here it is, things I have learned since my first day here at Lee:

1) Contrary to what I first believed, sleep is absolutely necessary in order to live. I may have thought I could stay up a week without sleep, but I eventually crashed and IT WAS BAD.

2) Some people come into your life as lessons and others come to help you walk through those lessons. But EVERYONE has a purpose.

3) It’s okay not to have it together all the time.

4) Roommates really can make or break a day. I’ve been on both sides of this and I can honestly say it is true.

5) It won’t kill me to miss a class or sleep in or simply take a break. Breaks are needed.

6) Coffee is my best friend. Caffeine can do wonders. (Especially on a weekend when you got 2 hours of sleep total and have a 10 hour work shift ahead of you and plans the same night.)

7) Prayer time is extremely important for my day. Taking 30 minutes to go spend time with God in the prayer room will always lift my spirits.

8) No matter what happens, my family is always there for me. My siblings will always try to take care of me and my parents will always love me. They are my family, through thick and thin.

9) Making room for new people in your life can sometimes be hard, but it’s all about how you view the situation. The moment you start viewing them as blessings, the moment you will realize how blessed you are to have them in your life.

10) My friends are seriously the best. Without the friends and support group I made this past year, I would not have been able to get through SO much. From ice cream runs to random adventures, I can always count on them to be there.

11) No matter how many times I mess up, God will be there to forgive me and show me His love.

12) Chick-fil-A has become my home away from home. I seriously could not have made it through this year without my Chick-fil-A family.

13) Sometimes you just have to put yourself in an uncomfortable situation in order to learn and grow.

14) And sometimes you just gotta LET GO!

15) When life seems overwhelming, God simply asks us to stop trying to control it and watch Him do wonders.

16) It’s almost impossible to successfully make a top bunk, and when you do it’s 30 minutes later and you feel like you’ve ran a marathon.

17) Papers are best written after midnight.

18) My RA is literally the best! From being our “Momma Marissa” to staying up to talk with me until 2 am, I don’t know what I would do without having such an amazing RA who has a heart and passion so similar to mine!

19) When my car doesn’t start for the third time this year, I shouldn’t call and freak out to my dad because he will drive up here, and it will only be because the steering wheel is locked…

20) You learn who your true friends are by seeing how much distance really doesn’t matter. If you truly care and love someone, the miles apart won’t make any difference.

21) Be careful who you trust, and what you trust them with.

22) Despite what professors say, it is in fact possible to write an amazing research paper the day before it’s due. It will just take you literally the whole day.

23) My hall became my family. This year I got 20 sisters who will tell me when I have messed up, watch out for me, and make sure I’m okay.

24) And most importantly, I’ve learned that God placed me here for a reason.

So that’s it. That’s just 24 of the things I have learned this year, and I cannot wait to see what God has planned for me next. While goodbyes will be hard this weekend, I couldn’t be more thankful for being able to live with such amazing sisters and experiencing life with the greatest people ever.

His Love

Lately I have been thinking about how God speaks specifically to me. And these past couple of days I have heard and seen God so much, because I started to see Him through everything. The small and the big things.

I first noticed that God uses LovethruShoes to show me His love. Ironic I guess, but also simply amazing to me. He knows where my heart and passion lie. He knows how much I struggle with control and wanting everything to be perfect, but the moment I broke down and said, “Lord I am not perfect. I am struggling so much, and I literally cannot and do not want to do this anymore,” was the moment I began to see how great He is! It was right after that day, I received a phone call about starting a huge shoe drive, and a couple days after that I received emails and phone calls that made everything with LovethruShoes fall into place. And a couple days ago we found out the shoes have entered Zambia. So here I am clearly seeing how incredible God is through something He is doing through and around me. That completely blows my mind, but also it is so encouraging to know God loves ME that much to speak to me in ways that I will listen and that I will learn best.

The other way God speaks to me and shows me His love is through people. This week I cannot even explain how extremely thankful I am for my best friends, my family, and my sisters on my hall. From the people that just came into my life to people that have been there since birth, God constantly shows me how much He truly cares. It’s in the moments my best friend looks through my smile and "fine" attitude and sees the truth. It’s the phone calls from my brother asking me about life and relationships. It’s the conversations with my sister about Africa and our futures. It’s the love and strength I see in my dad every time I hang out with him. It’s the comfort from my mom and grandma. It’s the random questions about my view on certain things I receive from my best friend miles and miles away. It’s the jokes and laughter me and my roommate share. It’s the joy and love I see through my brother’s girlfriend. It’s the tears and ice cream dates I go on. It’s the professors and staff that say things I needed to hear right then.  In all these people, I see God. I feel God and I experience His love for me.
This past week three main things made me see and feel God at the deepest. The first was when I began to tell my roommate my story and the next morning she sends me a message that I saw God so much through. I have always been so afraid to tell my story, but in those moments after I do tell someone, I see God show up. I hear His voice through those people. I hear the strength that imperfection brings and the amount of love that God has shown me. And then this past weekend I got to see God at work with LovethruShoes. 2,000 shoes and 200 dollars later, I looked in awe at the creator who is using someone like me to help people around the world. And then yesterday God showed me His love through my best friend. From looking me in the face and saying “you’re not fine” to taking me to get ice cream (because let’s face it… Ice cream solves everything :)). She’s there through it all. She sees the struggles I personally have, the incredible things God has done through my life, and the stress and anxiety that is constantly placed in my life. And it’s days like those that I truly saw the love of God through people in my life.
So to put it simply, I am beyond thankful for the intimate ways God chooses to speak to me specifically. It makes me realize that I am His princess and daughter, and it’s in those ways I feel and see His love for me.
Taking it all in,
Liz

A Typical Day

So yesterday was just one of those days that I literally had to stop and look to God and say, “I physically and emotionally cannot and do not want to do this without you.” I caught myself more than once just praying out to God and thanking Him for how he continuously works through me when I feel so inadequate.

Yesterday was just one of those days. But my life is filled with them. I get phone calls from donors or shoe collectors minutes before having to walk in and take an exam. I get bad news from people overseas and then immediately have to go to work. At times I just get completely overwhelmed, and yesterday was one of those days
I mean I absolutely am so thankful for what God has blessed me with and asked me to do for His Kingdom. And I would not trade my stress and busy schedule for anything, because through these days I get to see how small I am and how BIG He is.

Yesterday, I was at a point where I had to be a student, a sister, a daughter, a president of a nonprofit, a friend, and a coworker all at the same time. I literally was scrambling around trying to get at least one thing in order and that’s when I gave up. I simply sat down, surrendered it all to Him, and then He guided my footsteps and I got through it. Just like He always does.

It’s just incredible to me how God chooses people like me to work through when I’m in college and when my family is going through a tough time and when work is stressful and my friends are having a rough day and there’s problems with shipments and shoes, and God simply asks me to lean on Him and He will take care of the rest.

So to say the least, I’m thankful for the “typical days” in my life because I get to see God at work the most and I get to see how incredible He is and how much I truly need Him, always.

My Heart

My heart is heavy, my mind is constantly going, and my body aches. I’m home sick. Not from my house, or the new apartment, or my family, but from a place I’ve only step-foot in one summer, and people I have never met. It’s strange to me. How my heart and desire for a place I barely know is so incredibly strong. And I wish I could explain it. Every time I try, I feel like I end up with a jumbled mess of words that make no sense, but I thought I would write my jumble mess anyway.

I read a friend’s words this morning that seemed to describe what God has called me to do pretty well. She said, “He created me to travel the world, to have a home in HIM, to have a lap for the orphans, a hand for the widows, a voice for the voiceless, eyes for the blind, and a heart for HIS people.” It’s hard to talk about. I mean the people close to me obviously don’t want me to go miles and miles across the world, and if I could choose I probably would not choose to spend my life away from my family and friends. And I can choose. It is my decision, but God has clearly placed a purpose and passion so strong in my heart I can’t choose anything else.
And it’s scary. I know people will worry. I know being away from my family will be hard. I know what God is calling me to do will be nothing short of difficult. And I know it will be hard on my friends, my family, and people all around me. And I know it will be the scariest thing I have ever done, and taking a leap of faith not knowing where the next step is, is the scariest part. But this week I got to have lunch with an incredible lady, and she told me a little bit of her story, and in it she said, “I completely trusted God. Leaned on Him. And packed my car and started driving to TN. Not knowing where I would work or what I would do.” And a day before she got to Cleveland, she got a phone call that she had got a job here. And she said it was the scariest thing ever, not knowing what I would do, but it was the biggest act of faith and trusting God and it has been one of the best experiences so far.
I know it’s not time yet. People ask me all the time. Why not now? And I can’t explain it, other than I just know. Right now I need to be here, at Lee, in college, working towards what God has called me to do. Preparing my heart, leaning on Him, and learning His lessons DAILY. I need to show His love to people here and develop relationships here before I will be ready for Him to use me there. I believe in His perfect timing, but I can’t say that it makes this any easier. Being here in college is a constant heart ache. I see pictures, I hear of people going there, and I literally feel like I can’t breathe. Like my body is going to collapse. I’ve never been in love, but I heard something the other day that made me think. Someone told me that if God literally showed you all of His love at once, you wouldn’t be able to handle it. It would be so deep and so strong that we couldn’t handle it. And this is just a little piece of His love for me. Sometimes I feel like it envelopes me and covers me, but I know He has purpose for all of this, and I can’t wait to take that scary leap of faith when the time comes to be used for His purpose and to show His love through none other than business. Something that I come alive in and get excited about. In a country where my heart has been ever since I stepped foot on the beautiful ground.
So that’s my heart. The deepest parts. It probably scares and worries a lot of people, but I can’t help but be completely excited to see what God has planned for me, and to live each day here in Cleveland working towards a purpose in the future for His Kingdom and His Glory.

Resting in Patience and His Peace,
Liz
